29 July 1871 - SALE OF PROPERTY.—On Tuesday, Mr. W. T. Balls offered for sale by public auction, at the Crown Hotel, Lot 11, a free public-house called the Jolly Sailors, situate in Pakefeld-street, in the occupation of Mr. John Bird at the rent of £16. per annum, was sold to Mr. Dawson for £230.

Robert Turner, fisherman,Pakefield,pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly in the public house kept by Mr. Robert Dawson, on the 10th instant, limitand was fined 1s., and costs 6s.; or seven days' imprisonment.

Before the Reverend James Reeve (chairman), Robert Seaman, George Edwards and Colonel Leathes
Robert Dawson, landlord of the beer house Jolly Sailors, Pakefield Street, was charged with having his house open for the sale of beer during prohibited hours–namely, at a quarter to eleven o’clock on Saturday night, the 27th of April. Mr A Kent appeared on behalf of the defendant. Police constable Smith said he went into the house at the time mentioned, and saw three men in a room, one of whom drank some beer in his presence. For the defence, it was proved that two of the men had entered the house at a quarter to ten o'clock for the purpose of transacting business with the defendant about carting materials for for building. One of these men had a pint of beer directly, and had not drank all of it when the policeman entered the room. The third man was a lodger in the house, and he had no beer after his his return home that night. The magistrates dismissed the case with a caution to defendant, expressing their opinion that it was a proper case for the police to enquire into.
